"Through my work I have the privilege of learning about the history of AMS, and meeting, by phone and in person, some of the people who have supported the school over its 50 year history. It's a wonderful experience to hear the stories, and realize the deep connections that people keep with AMS throughout their lives."

Irene Purser

Atlanta, GA and Milwaukee, WI

Irene had the opportunity to garner many years of experience in business, finance and Montessori before coming to AMS. After selling her marketing business in 1985, she searched for a 2nd career and discovered Montessori's vision of peace through education. In addition to teaching and working with adolescents in wilderness programs, she was head of a large Montessori school in Atlanta for 8 years before coming to AMS. Irene is starting her 6th year at AMS and loves it; working with adolescents is what makes her heart sing.

I love working at the Arthur Morgan School where I get to combine my passion of education, adventure in the great outdoors, and working with youth. Parks Marion

Houseparent and Core Teacher

BA/BS Biology/Music

Guilford College

For the last five years Parks has been searching for exciting
education settings in which to get caught up. He has spent time
working on educational sailing vessels around the country. Also he has
worked as a private tutor/teacher, a swing dance instructor, and a
farm intern. When he is not finding creative ways to learn with kids
you will probably find him outdoors: running, swimming, fishing, or

camping or indoors playing flute, guitar or board games. "If I had to sum up all the reasons I am excited to be here...I would not be able to!"

Nick Maldonado

Houseparent and Language Arts Teacher

BA Communications

BA Media Arts and Design

James Madison University

Nick is from Shelton, CT. He went to school at James Madison University for degrees in Graphic Design and Technical Communication and graduated in 2000. He worked for a short stint in the corporate district before realizing what he really wanted to do was work with kids. The epiphany occurred while on an Outward Bound trip when his instructor informed him he was physically clumsy enough to help middle schoolers feel confident in the own awkwardness. He has been building those self-esteems ever since. He lives at AMS with his six year old son, Silas and his four year old son, Ezzy.

Sarah Matesz

Intern

Earlham College

Sarah has a variety of interests from sustainable farming to ceramics, from cooking deliciously healthful meals to hiking in the woods, and is excited to share her many skills. She loves the community at AMS and is inspired by the fun, funky, talented students and staff. "AMS is such a unique and incredible place; I feel so honored to live in and contribute to this learning space."

Tal Galton

Tal has been a utility player on the AMS team since 1999. He has houseparented, led trips, taught a little bit of everything, worked in the development office, run the farm program, and is now a co-clerk. After 12 years in Silver Cove, he now lives in Celo Community with his family in the timber-frame home they've been building since 2008. He likes to pick mushrooms, catch snakes, find interesting plants, hike in the Blacks, and run the local trails.
