Electives
Electives are a very important part of our program at AMS. In any year, students typically have the opportunity to participate in eight elective courses. Most elective classes run approximately six weeks for two hours per week. Small classes ensure that students receive individual attention and that activities are tailored to each student's ability and creativity.
Often we are able to integrate elective classes into other areas of our program. For example, a recent bread baking elective ran a weekend bakery at the local co-op to raise funds for our annual field trip. An auto mechanics elective repaired and prepared school vans for field trips. Students in a pottery elective created bowls for an "Empty Bowls" dinner sponsored by members of the school's hunger and homelessness field trip.
Electives offered in the past include: soccer, baseball, basketball and other sports, weaving, painting, pottery, jewelry making, paper making, photography, creative writing, treehouse construction, foreign languages such as German, Spanish, Italian, French and Chinese, rock band, drama, dance, guitar, bushwhacking and nutrition.
